problem with a Benq scanner

It's an S2W3300U and my OS is Vista, but I had the scanner with my previous PC so it's probably 5 years old.
Until a few weeks ago it was OK but it's started behaving oddly - assumes I want to save everything I scan as a JPEG, even when I’ve set it to text; and the scans are illegible - difficult to describe but entire background is grey dots so the text (or whatever I scan)is kind of reversed , like looking at a negative.
When I switched to Vista a year ago there were no Benq drivers available for that OS so I use a driver from Hamrick. WAs fine until recently.
Is the current problem likely to be the driver or the scanner itself? It was cheap , so doesn’t owe me anything; I’m wondering whether to ditch the scanner and buy new or try to fix the problem.

Try removing and reinstalling your driver.

thanks, Fruit Bat /\0/\
I fiddled around a bit doing that and now all seems well again.
