Probably a silly Broadband question

I hope this doesn't sound too clueless.
After checking email or whatever and then forgetting to disconnect the connection for say a couple of hours, does this time count as usage? Or is usage made up from actually going onto sites etc? I realise that big usage is mainly made up from downloading stuff.
Many thanks.

usage usually only applies when visiting sites as you have to download each do not go to the sites, they come to you. if you do not disconnect after receiving/sending email there will be virtually no usage unless you have auto-updates enabled for anyhting.

You only use your download allowance when you are actually downloading programs or browsing the net, it's ok to leave it connected otherwise even if your Pc is on, although some disconnect at night.
