Bought a Cannon Pixma 4000 last xmas (?99) - best printer ive used, very fast with the family pix from the digi camera. Lasers are fine but if your friend wants to do pictures on them then they will need a colour one which are expensive to run. Cannon pixma has 2 black and 3 colour cartridges total replacement cost is ?21 (not cannon replacements). Cartridges are very expensive for a laser but ive never owned one so dont know the true cost but it is higher than inkjet.

Anything below ?100 is classed as a 'disposable' printer. HP usually will go 'pop' at about 13 months, Epson are good but ink costs are astronomic, Lexmark same as Epson.

My advice would be to shop around (Ebay?) for a second-hand HP Deskjet 990cxi. The finest inkjet printer HP ever made.

Just for the record, I'm a printer engineer, I do know what I'm talking about.

What about epson cx3600 multifunction printer. At the moment its ?57.30 plus del. from e-buyer. I am using a canon ip4000 with which I am very pleased. Trevpearson is right, but is ?60-?70 excessive even if it only lasts 12-18 months.
