Check that your printer settings (in Windows 98se it's Start - Settings - Printers, right click on your printer), there isn't a tick alongside "Pause Printing". If there isn't, then select Properties - Details - Spool settings.
If "Spool print jobs so program finishes printing faster" is selected, change the selection to "Print directly to printer", then see if this helps - it isn't really a cure but is often a useful work-around.
If the above doesn't help, in Spool settings try this -
In the "Spool data" box you should have two options, RAW and EMF. Whichever is selected, change it to the other one.
If none of these helps, try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer drivers.
