Printer Communications Error

A friend has XP Prof and two printers attached to it. Some of the time both printers (connected to the USB ports) workd fine and at other times they just stop and produce a dialog box with the words "Coomunications Error" and some sort of message saying that the computer was having problems printing. I had a look, uninstalled each printer and its drivers and then reinstalled them, but the same problem came up.

Any ideas please? Thanks.

Are they connected directly to the PC, and not via an non powered hub, it sounds like a power drainage issue to me.

Yes, they're connected directly to the USB ports on the front of the PC and not into a hub. Even if I connect them to either port on the rear I see the same problem.
