Primary Hard Disk Failure

  brewersfan 21:34 12 Aug 2004

The outlaws' hard disk has failed as above, and after reading threads I tried fdisk /mbr, but then I get the error message "no fixed disks present".

I've tried the secondary IDE cable and other power connectors to no avail.

Any ideas please, or should I just replace it?

Thanks in advance,

Check drive is recognised in BIOS

Plug in as slave on another machine to extract any required data, fdisk and refomat.

Thanks for the link, but after reading Fruit Bat's post (thanks), the disk isn't recognised in the bios either. Sounds like it's had it maybe?

if it's not recognised in the bios and your absolutley sure the jumpers are correct then it's a gonner, anything important on there may well be recoverable by a specialist firm.

Yep, the jumpers are set correctly because they've been using it in their pc for the part three or four years. I'll try Fruit Bat's suggestion and put it in my pc as a slave to see what happens. The only concern there is that the disk might have been knocked out by a virus... was that possible?

have you tried fixboot? incase the mbr was damaged, doubtful but worth a go.

then again if it can't find the drive it won't work.

I had a problem with my hard disk a couple of days ago and when I checked in the bios there was no primary or secondary disk recognised.I highlighted it and pressed enter and saved the changes. It cured my problem. When I rang my computer expert at his shop he says the status can change for various reasons, like a surge of current for instance.I thought, like you my disk was a gonner.Hope it is as simple for you.
