'Primary disk drive 0 not found' error

My girlfriends works' PC keeps coming-up with the above message on a black screen when starting-up WinXP. Also shows '...press f2 to...'. What is causing this problem? The only way she can start-up properly it seems is by going into Safe Mode and going back to previous restore point.

usually it's a bad data cable connection to the HDD or Motherboard. But if it runs after a restore then it cannot be. She could try CHKDSK /F in the run window (XP) or whatever it is for other OS.
