Preventing sleep spin down of USB hard drive??

I have a WD MyBook USB hard drive and it spins down every 10 minutes. WD state this cannot be disabled. Does anyone know of any software or a routine that will save or access a file every so often to keep the drive awake? Thanks.

Can anyone recommend software that will autosave a working file at given intervals to a specific directory? Thanks.

Why?

If the drive is not being used, then the fact that it shuts down will prevent unnecessary wear and tear.

It is incredibly annoying having the drive spin down every 10 minutes, it always seems to have just spun down when you need it. I just want a way to access it in the background say every 9 minutes to prevent this, as it's driving me round the bend and constantly spinning up and down will give a HD more stress than running for a longer period.
