Powerpoint file size

Recently I've had a problem with the powerpoint 97 file size suddenly increasing after I've made just a few changes. In some cases it's gone up from about 500Kb to over 1.4Mb - too big for one floppy (and apck and go is inconvenient). Why is this, can I reduce the file size again, and if so how please?

PowerPoint is tracking the changes you made, so that it can revert if you press the Undo button. Therefore it is storing the changes within the presentation.

Choose Save As, give it a different name, and you should find that the file size drops significantly (PowerPoint drops the stored changes when you do a Save As).

Another possible reason is the fact that powerpoint is a poor picture editor. I prefer to edit pictures in another program and paste the finished version into Powerpoint. I suspect that Powerpoint treats edited images as bitmaps which are much larger than original pictures imported as JPG for example.
