Power-up stalls at desktop backdrop

  splinternet 23:14 18 Oct 2006

Just started getting a problem whereby power-up takes longer than normal and stalls when the desktop wallpaper appears, i.e. it doesn't go on to show desktop icons, start-up applications, etc... There is nothing to select. All I can do is ctrl-alt-del which brings up the task mgr, but cannot power down or restart from this. I can only turn off at the power switch. I have to try 2 or 3 times before, lo and behold, the power-up is successful and everything appears as normal. This is a recurring pattern now, and is worrying and annoying. Has anyone seen this before? I tried dropping back to a system checkpoint of last week, but it's made no difference. Virus scan (McHaffie) shows no viruses.
