Power pack failure?

  swapper 06:30 30 Sep 2006

I used the PC, everything was fine.
I finished, and switched it off correctly.
when I went to turn it on a couple of hours later there was nothing.
I have power to the printer and monitor.
I checked and changed the power cable - nothing.
The PC has not been moved, banged or anything.
It was cleaned inside (fans board etc) by vacuum, a few months ago so it cannot be dirt.
I took the cover off, turned the lights out to see if there was any flash or anything when I turned it on, but nothing. it looks completely dead.
What would be the next logical step please?

Odd that there's nothing at all.

Check the mains cable, the fuses, the switch on the back of the power supply.

€dstowe, thanks for the promp reply.
I have checked all the power cables and in fact changed the power cable. still nothing.

Check that the main 20 or 24 pin conector is seated correctly. If it is try another power supply.

ICF, thanks for that, and yes , the connector is seated o.k.
Would power still be indicated on the m/b if the on/off switch at the front of the pc were faulty?

There is normally power to the motherboard no matter whether the machine is running or not. Modern boards usually have at least one LED on the which lights whenever there is power to the PSU. If there is nothing, it indicates that there is something amiss before the motherboard. Power supply units do fail - sometimes spectacularly - have a sniff near it to try and detect a burning smell also, look on the M/B itself to see if there are any burn marks/exploded capacitors etc. which may indicate a catstrophic failure of the M/B and the internal PSU fuse operating.

€dstowe, Yes I have seen a LED light in the past which is no longer there.
Eveything looks fine on the board, no smell or anything.
I have now removed the Power Pack and will get another.
If/When I have sorted it...........I Shall return....

Thank you both.
