Power for external hard drive

  newts 13:27 02 Jun 2003

I am thinking of buying external hard drive to use as a back up mainly for music & photos. Does it need its own power or is usb2 sufficient.

it depends on how big how fast you need to investergate it

Generally as fast as my other hard disk as I may wish to edit video. I was thinking of an 80g or 120g size. The difference in price is only about £20

USB 1 or 2 will not supply sufficient power to drive a hard disk.

External hard drives whether you buy them ready made or make one up yourself are always independently mains powered.

It is no inconvenience, I use them all the time.

Many thanks I was afraid of that.My electric points are somewhat overloaded what with all the other extra's

The mains power consumed is tiny, just a few watts, much less than a lightbulb.

an anti-surge bar.

I have one with 8 Standard 3pin Sockets as well as a phone line splitter.

I know that this is not the question you were asking but it may provide a lateral answer
