portable/external hard drive vs. dvdplayer

can you tell if or why not the subject drives co-operate with dvdplayers with USB port?
does it depend on a poweredby type i.e. AC or USB or just a drive type i.e. dedicated media drive?
or is it a dvdplayer problem?

appreciate every single thought.

A USB DVD player usually requires a separate power supply. With those used with a laptop the drive sometimrs uses TWO USB drives
