Pornographic pop-ups

  ZootHornRollo 21:43 12 Feb 2004

Yesterday in order to resolve a problem with my system operating very slowly I reinstalled XP.
Now whenever I log onto to the net I keep receiving endless pop messages about every 5 minutes or more.

These are small -about 2-3 inches square - all have Messenger Service across the top of them - and invariably relate to some porn sites or else try to sell me spyware.

I never used to have these pop-ups on OE and have only experienced them since reinstalling XP. How do I get rid of them?

Shoot the messenger - Is it any good - the website hasn't been updated since last October it seems which is not that good a indicator. Have you tried it?

Yes it's good and Yes I've used it. I wouldn't have posted it otherwise.

Thanks - I'll try the long route first ( being a contrary so and so)and if that doesn't work will go down the shoot the messenger path. Thanks for your help

Went down the long route and it works perfectly.

It's not much of a long route either as it only took about 2 minutes to complete all the various steps.

As it's so simple to disable these messages using XP itself I wonder why all these pop-up stopper utilities exist. Am I missing something here?

The process will only stop Messenger Service pop ups and not all of them.

The utilities exist because some people don't want to get "technical" or get their hands dirty.

Also some people sell the utilities at £20 a go!!!
