POP3 unable to fetch mail

I'm tearing my hair out, having had no emails for around seven hours! Attempting to manually download them brings the error message "POP3 unable to fetch mail". Seem to recall something like this some years ago, but can't remember whether it resolved itself or whether I had to do something. Windows XP & Firefox. Anyone got the answer?

Sorry - should have stated that I'm on Gmail.

do you also get an error saying why?

(example: POP3: Unable to fetch mail. Error: Too many messages to download. Mail from this account has not been retrieved since ...)

The POP3 message is exactly as I have described and on a red background. Also in a slightly different location I have fleetingly seen an an oops message which I think is numbered 502, but it's on screen so briefly I can't really grasp it.

Try on Gmail Help that might help to explain it under CommonErrors tab, Troubleshooting etc.
