poor wireless signal

hi there,

i have a sky broadband router connected to my desktop pc downstairs in my house- when i try to connect to it via my laptop when i am upstairs the signal sometimes is ok to connect to the internet and other times it will not and will cut out after being connected. i am looking for something that will strenghten the signsl. i have found wireless repeaters on the net - how do they work and is this the solution?

Or abandon wi-fi when you're upstairs, and make an ethernet connection to your router using powerline plugs.
