Play and record audio without soundcard

The onboard sound on my PC is no longer working so to play audio I bought some USB speakers. Unfortunately I found that I couldn't record any audio with these into programs like Audacity because Windows doesn't recognize the USB speakers as a recording device only playback.

After trying many different recording programs and having exactly the same problem I decided to try a Google search for a Virtual Soundcard if such a beast existed.

I came across a program called Virtual Audio Cable or VAC for short which seemed to be exactly what I required. It reroutes audio from one application to another without the need to go through a soundcard. With it I was able to record an audio file playing in Windows Media Player with Audacity.

For anyone who cannot figure out how to set the VAC program up properly here is a link to a video tutorial
