Pirated operating system

Can somebody help me? A friend of mine gave me an old hard drive of his but he said it has a pirated copy of Windows XP Pro on it. Will I be able to fit this drive in my pc ( which has a genuine XP Home as the OS ) or will it cause too many problems. Ideally I would like to use the drive as back up and for the kids to run their games from.

Why not just format old drive and set it to slave and use as backup drive?

Because I wasn't sure if the slave drive needed an operating system. If it doesn't and I can use it as an extra drive then I'll give it a go.
Thanks for your reply by the way.

You only need windows on your main C drive, you can fit the other drive in and just format it and us it as extra space.
