PCI slots

  shellship 10:04 19 Dec 2007

Just taken delivery of my new Cougar and surprised to see v few spare slots - graphics card covers one of them anyway. Spoke to Cougar who said that it is no longer the practice to have lots of spare slots as so much is now integrated into motherboard. Is this right?

Yes that is correct present day motherboards only have two or three spare PCI slots plus

the display card connector PCI-E or AGP

Thanks and OK but why then does the case have room for 6 slots?

So you could fit any board of your choice.

Full size boards have more PCI slots although your lucky to see more than 4 nowadays

Matx boards my have only two slots.

Gone are the days when you needed a slot for:
sound card
serial and parallel header
lan card

Quite correct..It's all mobo depended.

Choose carefuly

Or expansion is not an option!

Expect the FE may step in here?

The amount of spare case slots all depends on the manufacture of the case, as you can also buy case fans that will use the case slot, and do require a PCI slot on the motherboard

Quite a few top end graphics cards are dual slot because of the cooler, so if you run two of them in SLI / crossfire, you're using up 4 of the slots at the back of the case straight away.

Thanks all. I'll just have to manage it!
