I have just bought a Gateway 5042b and it is has a PCI express slot. Do I need to use this if I'm to upgrade to Vista? Below are the specifications for Video.

Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (GMA950)
Up to 224MB DDR shared video memory
PCI-Express slot available for upgrade

The chipset is Intel 945.

It has onboard graphics, the PCI Express slot will allow you to upgrade to a better graphics card if you wish.

Have you run the Vista upgrade advisor program to check if your machine is suitable an which level of Vista is best for it. click here

No, PCI-express is so that you can upgrade your graphics card at a later date, you don't need it to upgrade to Vista.

,, thank you both.

Fruit Bat, I haven't yet set up my Gateway comupter; I'm aiming to do so in late summer when I'm passing this one I'm on now to my daughter.

I just thought I'd ask as I see some folks are having trouble with Vista. I have bookmarked your link though, thanks.
