Hi a friends pc wont boot past the windows 98 screen it goes black after that, he said there was a yellow mark against the hard drive in device manager so he updated the driver, after he had done that some sort of network thing appeared in device manager & when he started the pc it would ask for a password so he deleted this thing in device manager now he cant get past the win 98 screen, he been into safe mode but cant see anything wrong any ideas ???? thanks.
ps Also since he had a new hard drive installed on booting up it says primary slave drive error press F1 to resume whats that about ???
It sounds like the jumper settings on the hard drive are set to slave. If he is using just one drive then this needs to be set to master if two then the drive with win 98 on needs to be set to master and the other to slave. This would explain the the yellow mark in device manager as an exception would occur within windows. He should never have need to change the harddrive windows driver as these are standard within windows. Check the jumper settings and see if it will boot, if not boot into safe mode and see if there are any conflicts as i suspect windows is either seeing two drives where this is physically only one (in that case simply delete the extra non existent drive) or is seeing one which was set to slave. The only time you should have a conflict with a hard drive is in the above circumstances so if you are still seeing a conflict with everything checked and only one drive showing i would try deleting the hard drive entry and rebooting to see if windows will reinstall from there........good luck!
