When i try to shut down my pc in the usual way 'start - turn off - turn off' the computer 'saves settings' then comes up with usual shut down message 'windows is shutting down' but nothing happens after that. i have to shut it down manually using the 'on / off' button. any ideas please.

when the message "windows is shutting down" appears, how long do you leave it before you manually shut down?

Sorry - having re-read that link I don't think it's very good.

The easiest solution might be to use System Restore to roll the computer back to a date/time before the problem started.

You can speed up the time windows XP takes to shut it down by changing the setting in

the registry which are responsible for determining how long to wait before shutting down

(killing) open applications and services once the shutdown command has been given.

By editing these settings and changing them to lower values, you can considerably

decrease the amount of time that Windows XP needs shut down.

Start-Run REGEDIT and navigate to “KEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\”

Highlight the 'WaitToKillAppTimeout' value.

Set it to '1000' (the default should be 20000).

Now highlight the 'HungAppTimeout' value set it to '1000' also.

Open REGEDIT and navigate to 'HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop'

Highlight the 'WaitToKillAppTimeout' value.

Set it to '1000' (the default should be 20000).

Now highlight the 'HungAppTimeout' value set it to '1000' also

Open REGEDIT and navigate to

'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\'

Highlight the value 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout' Change this value to '1000.'

This would help to considerably speed up the time windows XP takes to shut down.
