Hi, my friend's computer has come up with the message 'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM'. I have tried safe mode, last known good config etc, i even tried to repair it using an XP CD but it didn't give the option of repair, just a fresh installation.
Please, please can anyone help?

System File

Missing Or Corrupt Windows\System32\Conf\System File

To fix the "windows\system32\config\system file is mising or corrupt" where
Xp wont boot:

Go to Recovery Console and type:

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system
exit

Again Fruit Bat, you are so incredibly brilliant!!
Thank you so much for this!
One thing i want to ask though please- do you mean use the method detailed in your link to get to the recovery Console?
And do i follow your instructions or the ones in the link?

Sorry to bother/hassle you again but your answer above says once in Recovery Console to type in this:

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system
exit

Do you mean do this? and if so do i press enter after every line?

Yes

Ok, i followed your instructions and typed:
cd system32\config (i pressed enter)

and then typed 'ren system system.old' (and pressed enter again)

and now i have the message 'The system cannot find the file or directory specified'.

What should i do now please?

ignore it (system is missing or at least windows cannot find it)

just carry on

ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system
exit

BLIMEY!!!!!
You are very very good!! Thank you for this!!
Thank you, i now have the desktop back!
Do i now have to follow any more instructions, ie follow your link and complete the 'step one' or bigger 'step two'?

If everything is back to normal leave it alone, however if you find you are lacking some programs data updates etc

it is worth doing a system restore to the latest date available.
