Hello Chaps and Chapesses,
My computer has just crashed. When I turn it on I get as far as POST. The lights on the keyboard come on briefly and off, then there is a single system beep and then I get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner, and that is all. I cannot make use of any of the options in POST, and I cannot boot into safe-mode.
When I try to repair XP with my XP disc,I get as far as "Press any key to Boot from CD" option, the wired keyboard does not respond, and the computer just keeps on showing the same screen.
Any help would be gratefully received.
You are getting the usual "POST Beep" but it would be well worth checking that the Graphics Card and Memory Sticks are properly seated and, while you're at it, giving the inside a wee Blow through/clean out.
None of these actions is likely to make any difference but, there is a "Rule of Life" that says that a little loving attention, to detail, works wonders.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I managed to dig up a small external drive and used that for a clean install. The computer seems to be fine, so it appears to be a software fault. My C drive is in a caddy and I can access all of my files, so no physical damage there.
The problem is that without the old registry, my applications do not run as I like them. The question now is how do I repair the old OS so that I can get my original C drive and registry up and running?
It is worth noting that C and D are partitions of the same physical drive.
