PC will not shut down

Hi, new to this forum and already in need of help.

Just moved back to UK and found that my lap top will now not shut down properly. This means that I can no longer go back to a restore point or load windows updates. More than this Word and Power Point are no longer working at all.

Is this likely to be a software error, me being stupid or a virus?

Many Thanks in anticipation of any replies. If you can't help, do you know of any groups who could?

Ben
