Pc switch on problem

My neighbour has just got an old Pc and all seems well with it except when she switches it on. When she presses the power button the green led comes on but it does not do anything. The screen is dead and there no HD activity just the green light comes on. If she then switches the PC off at the plug and then switches it back on again the PC starts up right away without having to press the powerswitch. Any thoughts could it be the power supply. It does not seem like standby fault. Thanks for any ideas.

Assuming that the green LED is simply indicating that the mains supply is on, it's quite possible that the PSU is on its way out -- it's not responding properly to the signal from the PC that tells it to power up.

Any chance you can swap the PSU for another one, or try it on your own PC to see if it works?

Could be the motherboard.
