PC Start-up Problem

  Donal-Rua 20:25 17 Dec 2006

My PC, XP – SP2, on automatic update download but controlled install, has developed Start-up fault.
It freezes before reaching Login Box. Complete freeze and will only respond to Reset Button.
This gives me option to start in Safe Mode.
I have checked for errors and ran Registry Mechanic. This may get it to start but not always. This afternoon it took four attempts to get it into normal mode.
Any suggestions, please?

Failing psu ?

Open the case and check all the fans are working ok and free of dust etc.

Thanks skidzy
I’ll try that in the morning and update later.
Many thanks.

check RAM. I had similar problem. I only had 256mb, after installing another 512 had no further problem.

Thanks 'ronec' but I have 1024mb and that should be sufficient.
I followed 'skidzy' advice but the system is clean and the fans are moving freely.
I have used an old Restore Point and got it to start but it does appear to be struggling.
It’s slow and laboured until it gets fully operational – then it’s perfect.
I can’t find any infections. Spybot – S&D, Ad-Aware, CCleaner are all returning a clean system but something is slowing it down.
Still open to suggestions...

You may have a corrupted startup program (just an idea)

Try going to

Start/Run and type MSCONFIG and enter, select startup and untick everything except the AV and firewall and reboot.

Now if the system reboots ok,its possibly a startup program problem.
Adding a tick to one startup app at a time may find the culprit if indeed a startup program.
It will be a matter of elimination.

Dont forget to update your AV and run in safe mode.

Once windows has loaded what does task manager say CTRL+ALT+DELETE and processes,is the cpu high ?

If the cpu usage is high have a look what is using the resources and post back exactly as it shown in task manager.Upper and lower case are paramount.

Updates as messed your comp up. Run Restore to before the updates

  woodchip 23:34 18 Dec 2006

You should be able to do it in Safe Mode

If you loaded the Windows Remoal tool try not to load it

Many thanks to both 'skidzy' and 'woodchip'. Your ideas are much appreciated.
'Skidzy' – Task Manager shows nothing abnormal. CPU is very low. Idle shows +98%.
Before trying your solution I have identified one program – Russian Language Translator. It appeared unstable a while back and was giving abnormal results. I have the CD so I have Uninstalled this completely. It appears to have done the trick.
Two Start-ups have gone through more smoothly although still a little slow, I feel.
However, that may be caused by the newer AV & Fire Wall updates.
You were both on the right track and many thanks for your help.
I’ll tick this as I feel it’s now ok.
