PC sometimes won't boot

After a recent system crash when I was playing a CD, I've had problems starting my PC. For a while I couldn't get it to start at all.
However, since pulling out/swapping some of the Memory cards, it has been a mixed bag. Sometimes the fans whirl and nothing else happens. Sometimes it bleeps fairly soon after switching on and it boots up as normal.
When it does boot up it's ok and CD's also play ok. Any ideas please?

start button could also be faulty, as all it does is short two pins on the motherboard to start the motherboard running, you could try this by tracing the wires from start button to mobo pins bottom right corner of motherboard. just momentary touch the two pins at the same time to start the comp
