pc shutting down n its own

friends pc running win 98se with athlon xp chip 1666mhz on mb vt8366-8233. system starts up giving win display as normal and then shuts down any help and tips would be appreciated.

Try starting it in Safe Mode, press F8 during POST and choose safe mode and see if it loads and then check in Device manager for any conflicts.

Have you installed any RAM, or a new processor lately? Some Bios will shut down the computer if the processor gets too hot, to stop it getting damaged, also faulty RAM can also cause premature shutdown.
Any anti-virus softeware installed? Maybe it's closing down to prevent contamination.

when i speak to them i will ask them to start in safe mode see how things go.
no new ram fitted although did say got warning about cpu fan not working alright. fan has been checked and no problems noted. has pc cillin on system wil get them to check
