PC Partition size and system backup utility

I have several drives attached to my Windows XP Pro PC and I'm trying to backup the system using the system backup utility. The backup file size is about 7.5Meg. I have a 20Gig drive which is half full, indicating that there is 12Gig of free space left on the drive. I start the backup to this drive and about half way through the procedure the program halts, indicating that there is not enough space on the drive. I then start the backup again but this time I backup to an internal partition of 60Gig and it completes, creating a file of 7.5Gig in size. A I wish to keep all my backups on the 20Gig external drive I decide to copy this file to it but as soon as I attempt this the system reports, not enough space on the drive. To recap. I'm now copying a file of 7.5Gig to a half full drive which has 12Gig of free space but the system reports there is not enough space. Anyone got any ideas?
