Folks, I need a pc for the running of my retail shop. What setup should it have? What kind of software etc should that Pc be running?
Thanx in advance.

What do you need to do with it?

What kind of shop is it?

If you just want it to play minesweaper when you haven't got any customers in then any PC will do ;)

If you need to produce invoices or run a stock inventory then you are going to need software to do this. Do you want it to act as an EPoS?

Sorry there are so many questions but can't really say anything without that info.

Also think about noise, it costs a little more but your pc can run silently with the right fans.

I will need it for invoices, running stock inventory and as an EPoC.

click here for one example of a company that supplies software that may meet your needs.

What is it that your shops sell and in what volume?

Are there not any trade magazine/publications that you have access to that can provide information?

Sorry, not trying to be difficult but this is a fairly specialist request and so I can't just say "buy this PC and this bit of sofware" and let you expect it to work.

Thanks, Sir Radfordin, but the link you gave may be incorrect or the site is no longer available, maybe only temporarily unavailable. I'll try again, though. Thanx a million.

click here instead - seems I posted a link to a bit of their site that no longer exists.

They aren't the only supplier of software though and it may not be suitable for you. If you could tell us the line of business your shop deals in something more specific may be found (a budget will also be helpful!)

Decide what you want a computer to do

Find the software which will do this and preferably see it working for someone else.

Then and NOT before, choose a computer which will run this software

Any emachine or Compaq from PCW will be more than enough.

I beg to differ. It is likely to have too many extras that a business doesn't need and may not allow for the configuration that is required for this setup.

Utter rubbish....the computers will be of sufficiently high spec to run any extra programmes that may need to be bought in. For £499 and instant pick up, he will get a well-specced computer and 17" screen. OK some do not have Works but there are plenty of free office progs up for grabs. The computers are reliable and you will not get much cheaper than £499 all-in.
