pc heating up

booted computer forgot bout it.

a few hours later smell of burning from pc
found windows98 cd in cd drive
hard drive partitioned have windows 98 & xp
could cd have caused this.
pc working fine since

The CD drive will have cooked, you should buy new. Get a DVDRW they are cheap as chips

Unlikely, I'd suggest a good spring clean to ensure all dust and carpet fluff removed and to check that all fans are running properly.

If your CD drive has cooked it will bring a whole new meaning to "CD burning" ;^)

Who can say, Woodchip could be right, but would vikpole then say the PC was working OK if the CD drive had terminally, expired and gone to meet its maker in so pungent a manner ?

I was thinking that Laser had not switched off. That would burn disc, but it did not say. Only that the 98 disc was in drive

without being the bearer of bad news a burning smell could also be caused by a failing/failed processor fan or a short it may be worth popping the case open for further investigation
