pc hangs

  Kingfisher 17:54 20 Jul 2005

When I run chkdsk /f my p.c. does all the checks but then hangs on trying to reboot. When I did a forced shutdown i.e holding power button in for 5 secs and restarted the p.c. boots up to chkdsk running and then hangs again. the only way I cured this was to do af8 safe start and select last known good configuration. Can anybody help me preventingthe lock up. My pc is Dell 8300 series3.4ghz pentiun 4 1 gig ram xp home edition sp 2 many thanks

Have you tried the "sfc /scannow" run command (without the quotations)? You may need the WinXP installation disk.

Put your WinXP disc in comp, and run

SFC /SCANNOW from run box

You can get at it through Consol. after starting with XP disc or you may get to it by keep pressing F8 as computer start you should type in Consol FIXMBR

Tried running sfc /scannow all i get is a black box appear on screen for less than a second, using the pause key it actually states that it is sfc.exe but does nothing

I can see that sfc is an external command, but with the xp installation disk inserted at start up and pressing r for recovery consol, I end up with a c:\windows prompt how doI proceed from there, Thanks
