PC freezes at startup

I have a pc which has been fine up until now. I went to switch it on, it beeps once as normal, and then it freezes at the screen which says :

Press TAB to show POST screen, DEL to enter SETUP.

Pressing either the TAB button or the DEL button has no effect. The screen does not go beyond this point. I've tried clearing the CMOS by using the appropriate jumper on the motherboard. I've also put the Windows XP CD in the drive to see if it will start up from there so I can do a "Repair".

What else can I try?

(The motherboard is a K8S 755A.)

any ideas anyone please?
I've also tried F8 to get into Safe Mode but there's no response there either.

Yes I would say it is a Memory fault as this is the next thing checked after post beep

Actually I've just disconnected the hard drive and I can then get into the BIOS that way. Then as soon as I connect the hard drve again, the pc freezes at that point.

Does that still mean that the memory might be at fault?
