This could be a RAM issue or even a motherboard problem. If this is a desktop how many RAM sticks have you got? If you`ve got two, remove one of them and try with the other. If the problem persists swap them over and try with just the other.

or motherboard

have got 3 memory sticks in which i can swap or change but how do i test the motherboard and cpu.

or even the psu.could it be the cpu or more the other 2.

RAM is easy enough to test: download memtesti86 (click here), unzip and burn to a CD and run as a bootable CD. Allow it to make at least 1 full pass, prefereably 5 (may take more than 30 minutes per pass)

PSU seems more likely to be the problem. Timing just coincidental to your virus issue.

could this be why i cant install xp os. have got a spare psu and ram so will try them.and also try cd.
