PC badly infected

Hi guys, Have been trying to sort out father-in- laws pc for the past few days. It has been running for about the past eight months with no AV set up and no cleaning any any sort.I have found 308 spyware programs running and loads of virus's. What has got me worried ,is the fact that Avast AV has found serveral virus's in the memory which seem to be quite bad.I'm coming around to the idea of wiping the HD and starting again, Would like your thoughts on this.I would need some simple instructions on wiping HD and reinstalling O/S which is xp home. Thanks

Windows XP makes wiping the drive easy - you can do this during the install click here

However, before you do that you might want to post a HJT log click here on this specialised forum click here

what other security programs have u used? try using Hijackthis...but bearing in mind it will list some system files so be sure to know which ones are the viruses and which ones are the system files...but try that and you may not need to reinstall the OS...i had someone with a similar problem but they had over 1,200 spyware when I ran Ad-Aware...the most I have ever seen so far...so since they didnt have any of the recovery discs I thought maybe its time they need a new PC...but I gave Hijackthis a try and hey presto, was like a new machine without having to reinstall the OS or build a new PC...

Before you wipe the drive.

Back up all important data files (cleaned)

Do you have all the drivers for motherboard graphics card modem etc.?

Have you got the XP on CD is is it preinstalled?
Do you have the XP serial number.

Remember you will have to download and install all updates again.

Have you got the application / games disks and numbers to reinstall?
