My hard drive (Giga-byte GA-K8NS Ultra-939) supports both PATA & SATA drives. I have two PATA drives, one is making odd noises & so am looking to replace this with a larger capcity SATA drive. On a PATA drive I can set the master / slave drive using links. How do I carry out the corresponding configuration when using the mix of PATA & SATA or should this arrangement be avoided?

It is quite safe to mix the two types of drive, I have my operating system set to boot up on the SATA drive and use the PATA drive for data and Virtual Memory. My PATA drive is actually configured as a Slave as I also have a DVD drive on the other part of the connector and that is set as the Master. You can configure whether you boot from the SATA drive or the PATA drive in the BIOS but if you do decide to do that you will need the PATA drive to be a Master.
