Passwords and ebooks

I'd like to try to sell an ebook on my business website. I'm guessing that the best format for downloading would be for use with Adobe Reader.

I need to put a password on the download so that the file will not open unless somebody has paid for it?

Is there a simple way of using a password so that the user only has to enter it once (in a similar way we do with software)?

It is not really ideal for users to enter the password evertime they open the book as would happen if I put the password on the Adobe file.

Any advice would be welcome.

Try zipping the file up and putting a password on the zip file then once they have unzipped it they can read it whenever they want without putting in a password.
