Password retention in Firefox 3.0.5

I have the relevant instruction "Remember passwords for sites" checked but the option never comes up for saving to be applied. There is no window coming up asking if I want to save a particular password, and it steadfastly refuses to remember them. This means I have to type them in each and every time which is a real pain. Any one any ideas short of re-installing FireFox? The strange thing is it will remember the login names! I have XP SP3

Tools/options/security, tick the box to remember passwords.

I have cleared the problem! I decided to get rid and un-installed it. I thought I would give it another try, but have to admit that whilst it is marginally quicker than IE7, I do not find it as comfortable to use, and there are some funny quirks in it like getting the full blue shading when trying to load PCA pages and only getting rid of that by adjusting the Java settings. You then have to revert back to the Java settings to view other sites. Too much aggravation for me!!

I'll close this one out now.
