Password protection for folders

  holme 13:42 15 Aug 2007

Please can anyone recommend a free utility to allow password protection to be applied to selected folders, without at the same time hiding them.

We've tried numerous freebies but they all require the folder(s) to be hidden in a 'private vault' (or similar) which is then accessed via the taskbar and password-protected.

The only one we've found to keep the folders in place and still visible, but password-protected, is Hide Files and Folders. But that's shareware - at 49 dollars... :-( TIA.

click here it allows you to password protect (as an option) folders as you compress them and just shows a zipped folder.

Thanks for all the prompt suggestions folks. Unfortunately, with one exception, none of them will simply apply password protection without either hiding the folder(s), and/or encrypting or compressing the contents, none of which meets the need. :-(

Simmo07's suggestion (Hide Files and Folders) does exactly what we want but, despite what it says on the tin, it ain't freeware. T'is shareware - at 49 dollars...

So we'll just have to keep on looking Scully, but thanks anyway.
