Partition Hard Disk

  wbiggchiefy 23:46 16 Mar 2006

Does anyone have clear instructions which will advise me on how to partition my hard disk pls?
Have looked on the net but I don't know how reliable the instructions are and don't want to risk wiping the whole disk.
The Hard Disk in question is Seagate Barracuda 200GB (approx) with about 60GB full.
Or alternatively is there a cheap(ish) piece of software I could buy to do this?

One question

Why do you want to partition?

Main thing is time - I would like to have Disk in smaller portions (and keep some Blank) - for some reason I keep getting small portions of data towards the end of the disk.
Think it would be better to confine this - or am I wrong - you will know best.

hi again chiefy

best thing to do is defrag the drive on a regular basis, this will help to keep things running better.

on partitioning the drive, some do, some dont. i personaly have 3 drives (2 IDE, 1X40gb 1X80gb partitioned to 64gb and 10gb plus SATA 250gb as master). only reason the 80gb is partitioned is from when i only had IDE drives and used the 10gb part for backups and just can't be bothered to un-partition it.

You need specialist software (partition magic 8)to partition a drive if it has data on it (and its still fraught with danger of losing everthing.

Partitioning is best done on a totally empty drive BEFORE you install the operating system.

Ranish is supposed to be able to partition a hard disk without loss of data already on it.
