paragraph spacing in Word

I've received an email containing notes for a meeting. I want to print these notes as a document for a meeting. I've done a copy>paste into Word and made a number of changes to the text as i received it by email but I can't format it properly. In particular there is double spacing between all paragraphs and I want single, but the "format" option has no effect on it.
Also, there 's a vertical line down the left-hand side of the page.
Any suggestiosn, please?

Highlight all the text (CTRL + A) then Format>Paragraph. Line spacing and Indent set to zero`s. Line spacing to zero.

The line down the left could be removed from Format>Borders & Shading select none in the left hand pane and see if this gets rid of it.
