Page validation

I've run a page through the w3 validator with the result

Line 53, column 31: there is no attribute "background"

td width="183" background="/images/splice.gif">

The speach marks after background= are in red yet there's a repeat of this background instruction in the cell below that does not get pulled up.

The person who has asked me to do the site wants it to run through the validator 100%.

Anyone any ideas. If the link to the page is required I can post that.

I'm going to tick this resolved as the person concerned has decided I can use one of the standard 256 colours rather than using the splice which was a specific colour.

I don't understand why it hasn't flagged the second background instruction as well. The attribute "background" is a proprietary tag and is not valid.

If you are validating as Transitional you can use attribute "bgcolor" to put the colour in. It has been deprecated so if you are validating as Strict it will get thrown up as an error.
