Page Numbering in Word 2007

I have a long document, with annexes. I have defined a number of styles for the document, one of which, Heading 9, is for the Annex headings and is formatted to say 'Annex_A', with the A being autonumbered. The page numbers in the Annex footers are formatted to start with the chapter number, and the chapter number is set to Heading 9: expected result is therefore 'A-1, A-2...'. The annexes are all contained in separate document sections, the footers are delinked.

The problem is, the sequence of page numbers in Annex A (4 pages) goes: A-1, 4-2, 8-3, 11-4; and Annex B (5 pages) goes B-1, 3-2, 4-3, b-4(sic), d-5!!

Any help out there??? Just about to punch my computer out.

I think inserting headers and footers is a bit odd in Word 2007 as of luck!
