Just fitted a P4 3.2ghz cpu but its only showing 1.6ghz when pc boots up and in properties for my computer. Done a test at pc pitstop site and same again, 1.6 and tells that this is below average for similar users. any ideas as im completely stumped on this.

cheers

Looks like the settings in the BIOS haven't been set correctly, m117chief, maybe the System clock speed is set at 100MHz rather than 200MHz. The multiplier should be locked and unchangable at 16. But you would need to check all that with the CPU's manual and your motherboard's manual before trying to change anything. Download and run CPU-Z, see what it is reporting for those settings. click here

Sounds like that it is the FSB (Front Side Bus) in your bios that is set wrong. Can you get into your bios to check?

  m117chief 18:39 18 Apr 2007

i can get in my bios. Would it be called FSB in the bios or should i look for another name?

  jam500 18:50 18 Apr 2007

Not all bios is the same but this is where i find mine. Go into Advance-CPU configuration-CPU host frequency, Mine is set to manual as i have overclocked mine-Actual frequency, The speed should be there. But as i said not all bios is the same. As reference my CPU is a P4 2.8 but is overclocked to 3.0 and the FSB is at 220.

  m117chief 18:51 18 Apr 2007

ok ill check it out now. mine does have overclock feature too but ive not touched it yet until i find out whats wrong with it. 5mins.

  m117chief 19:07 18 Apr 2007

Ok ive been into my BIOS only thing i can seem to do is this. This is laid out as it is in BIOS.

Spread spectrum (Disabled) ((havent a clue what this does.

Host clock at next boot is - 133mhz. (this overclocks my CPU, wont go higher than 148mhz)

DRAM clock at next boot is - By SPD

DRAM over clock by - 0mhz

VDIMM select - 2.6V (default)

AGP VddQ select 1.5V

thats is from what i can tell. i would see if i could update my BIOS but i cant seem to do it without having to pay for it :(

  jam500 19:15 18 Apr 2007

Ok, Not sure. Is the CPU a dual core chip like a Pentium D. A word of warning! If you tinker around with the host clock speed, Only do so at tiny amounts-no more than 5MHz at a time.
