Are Pentium Northwood and Prescott interchangable CPU's? will they both fit and work in the same socket. Or do they need different socket motherboard?

Just a quick look click here seems to suggest Northwood uses Socket 478, Prescott moved to LGA775.

From second link, it seems some may be interchangeable

What I have at the moment is a Celron 2.6Ghz based on the Prescott P4

Pentium 4 generation of Celeron processors is packaged in 478-pin FC-PGA2 package. (click here)

off the top of my head, yes. I t would be best to know the motherboard. Also with some motherboards you need to put in a northwood before you can put in a prescott ( daft).

Anyway , here is a support list for a ASRock P4i65GV. This shows that the socket will take all these variates of a P4.click here

Do you know the motherboard and can you post the code of the chip.

The RK80546RE077256 Prescott should run at 133Mhz with a 22 times multiplier. the only thing out of the ordinary, against other 478's, is that the voltage runs at 1.25/1.4V. Slightly lower than a northwood.

But the motherboard, if it supports it, should autodetect all of those settings.

Sorry did not see that I had posted it before. Just Having a look for the Motherboard PDF that I managed to find a bit back

Just checked it is the 478 pin socket so it should take both Up to 3.6Ghz
