P17RUNE.DLL error

After a Windows XP auto update, I started experiencing the following errors
at startup:

RunDll32.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point_except_handler4_common could not be located in the
dynamic link library MSVCRT.dll.

A second dialog box comes up and says RUNDLL ERROR loading P17RUNE.DLL The
specific procedure could not be found.

The auto update from Microsoft included an intel motherboard update, NVIDIA
update, etc. How to get rid of this error which was all caused by
Windows auto update feature.

Do a System Restore to a date prior to the update, then when the update downloads again, choose the custom install option and don't install the "intel motherboard update, NVIDIA
update, etc." part of the update. That is, so long as your motherboard etc. are/were running okay.

I am marking this as solved. Although your suggestion stops the problem happening it does not really solve it. I still cannot install the MS recommended update!!
