just exactly how safe is it to overclock a cpu before it wil fail

Depends on many things, such as the CPU itself (AMD, Intel) and which core it has.

You will prbably need to put a better heatsink on to keep it cool. A safe overclock could be somthing like an Athlon 2200 running as an athlon 2400 with an uprated fan.

Go the water cooling route and intel p4 3ghz can cross the 4ghz barrier!
