Over-written hard drive

  xquest 18:34 03 Apr 2004

A friend has run the XP recovery disk on her PC and thus in effect re-installed Win XP. Naturally no data or applications remain accessible.
I have told her that she should stop trying to do anything with the computer so as not to further overwrite any data which is left.
Has anyone any experience of recovering documents, pictures etc. from such a situation?

I remember long ago recovering a single deleted file using a Norton program, by identifying a unique word in the document (the document was not in the recycle bin).

However her situation involves many Word documents and hundreds of .jpg pictures.
(yes, I will speak sternly to her about back-ups etc., when the shock has worn off).

Is there any free/cheap software which might do the job ?

Many thanks, folks. I'll follow these ideas up and see if the lady can be rescued.
