OS for an old laptop

  Jak_1 02:16 12 Aug 2008

A friend has been given an old laptop running XP-Home but the os is the German version. He is willing to by a new copy of XP though. Is it just a simple matter of putting the cd in the drive and doing a fresh install or would he need the motherboard drivers etc re-installing too?

He can try doing a XP repair using an English Windows XP disc and see if that will change the

German version to English without having to reinstall the motherboard drivers

If that do not work he will need to download the motherboard drivers and any software that was

installed on the laptop from the manufacture web site

Go to the laptop maker web site and download all the XP drivers and software listed for that model

Once you have the drivers and software from the site burn them to a CD

You now need an English Windows XP disc to do a fresh install

Or he can try and see if an English recovery disc is available from the laptop maker

Would Start>Control Panel>Language and Regional Options not be able to change it to English from German?

My opinion for what its worth is Not XP. Its made to run such as 98se and would be faster

It is a Toshiba Satellite S5100-501

All that does is change a few things, it does not change the lanuage of the OS.

Yep it is a german version, bought by a footballer who used to play for Byern Munchen and now plays in the prem.
My friend is doing some building work at his house and the laptop was thrown into the skip so my friend asked said footballer if he could have it and he agreed.

Thanks for all your help. I will let him know whats what and leave the decision to him. I can clear all data and un-needed progs off for him and install some useful progs with icons on the desktop for him to navigate by.
Hardly worth spending £50+ on a new os really.
I'll tick this as resolved.
